Near the last day of the Trial Lawyers College, everyone painted something meaningful to them. This was not about artistry, but about the imagery involved in telling a persuasive story. Through visiting various comics conventions over the years, Fairfax criminal lawyer Jonathan Katz and his son met and re-met legendary Marvel Comics artist Bob McLeod (on Patreon.com and MBartist , who also created the great Superhero ABC and co-created New Mutants. Bob has penciled and/or inked a vast number of superhero comics, Crazy magazine for years, and several Star Wars comic issues.

In this Beat the Prosecution podcast episode, Bob discusses the process of developing a story's imagery and characters, replacing comics' earlier history of white male characters with extensive diversity, working a few doors down the hallway from Stan Lee, and the teamwork involved in producing a comic (which relates to the teamwork needed by lawyers defending co-defendants joined together for the same criminal trial).

Bob's initial efforts to break into comics were rejected. He persevered, including studying the work of successful comics artists. Bob then got his break by starting with such work as lettering on Marvel's Crazy humor magazine. His talents then got increasingly noticed, and Bob became a highly sought-after comics artist. In this interview, Bob aptly underlines the importance of persevering for success, which is also vital for criminal defense lawyers and their clients.

This interview will appeal to trial lawyers, comics fans, and those interested in the storytelling process.
